Coming conventions, observations and other environment-focused events
Earth Day may have come and gone, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of other eco-oriented events on the calendar in coming weeks. Programs scheduled during the month of May include the following: May 6 - 12 (international) International Compost Awareness Week International Compost Awareness Week was first observed in Canada in 1995, and has since spread to other countries such as the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. Events scheduled for the week include community garden work parties, plant exchanges, composting demonstrations, workshops and compost giveaways. May 12 - 13 (Ottawa, Ontario) Green Energy & Transportation Show Organizers say the G.E.T. at Lansdowne Park will be "the first public exhibition to empower consumers to get thinking green." The show will feature exhibits and information about alternative energy sources, hybrid cars, health and wellness, along with speakers, a kids' zone, an "eco-boutique" fashion show and entertainment by a "junkyard symphony." May 19 - 20 (Atlanta, Georgia) To be held at the Georgia World Congress Center & Georgia Dome, this first stop on the global Change the World Tour will feature performances by Sting and Mary J. Blige, giveaways, future-oriented showcases, films, fashion and networking opportunities. Between now and 2017, the Change the World Tour plans to present hundreds of concerts and other events aimed at promoting a sustainable future. All expo events will be free to the public, and organizers expect to donate 100 percent of their after-tax profits to organizations offering permanent solutions to global problems. A humanitarian award will also be presented to one individual or organization at each event. May 18 - 19 (San Antonio, Texas) Aimed at architects, builders, decision-makers, educators and students, this event at the Live Oak Civic Center will feature green product displays, free classes led by GreenExperts and free showings of "An Inconvenient Truth," "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and "Living with Ed." May 29 - 31 (London, U.K.) Organized by Green Power Conferences, this event at the CBI Conference Centre, Centre Point Tower, is aimed at business leaders looking for ways to respond to the "challenges and opportunities of climate change." Through June 15 (San Francisco, California) Making the Choice: Bringing Forth an Environmental Renaissance Presented by the Natural World Museum, this exhibit in the San Francisco City Hall's 4th Floor Rotunda Gallery explores "how our daily habits affect the global environment." It also aims to stimulate viewers to take action and find solutions to problems in seven different topic areas: waste reduction, water, environmental health, transportation, urban design, urban nature and energy.
