The start of the new academic year is a great time to sort through your things and free up space in your home.

Target your de-cluttering to find a home for the items you no longer need, but others will love to have.

What to De-Clutter

Musical InstrumentsIs it years since you played your violin? Or did you discover that you weren’t the guitar hero you hoped you would be? Then it may be time to dust off those old musical instruments and pass them on to someone who can learn them with renewed enthusiasm.

  • Sports Equipment: You may also have hockey sticks or other pieces of sports equipment sitting in the back of a cupboard which haven’t been used for some time. Budding athletes of the future may be glad to take them off your hands.
  • Books: If it’s not that long since you left education yourself, you may also have a selection of textbooks or items from the reading lists which you can pass on to the next generation of students.

Where to Get Rid of your Items

You may be looking to make some money from your things, or perhaps you just want to create some space in your house, but whatever your motivation for de-cluttering, there are many ways to find new homes for your unwanted items.

Selling

There are a number of on-line sites where objects can be offered for sale, including Craigslist in addition to the well known auction sites.

The classified section of your local newspaper will also run advertisements for items for sale and many offer a free listing.

Making your Item Attractive for Sale

As well as the obvious task of cleaning the item for sale to show it at its best, it’s also worth thinking about any extras you have on offer. For example, do you have a bag for the sports equipment, or spare unused consumables, such as reeds for wind instruments, or extra shuttlecocks? This will get more clutter out of your house as well as offering more to your potential buyer

Donating

If the priority is creating space rather than making money, there are many outlets for your generosity. Again, online sites such as freecyle are great places to offer your unwanted articles, allowing them to be re-used and preventing them going to landfill. Local schools and youth groups may also be grateful for your items, especially in times when donations and budgets are reduced.

Whatever your motivation for de-cluttering, it is worthwhile thinking about the time of year and what people might want. As the new school year begins, there is a market for second-hand good quality equipment.

You will be recycling your unwanted items, making the new owners very happy and creating a little space and calm in your home.
