It is easy to make your own natural skin butter. Your skin butter will not contain any harsh ingredients or synthetic preservatives.

There are only a few ingredients and steps to take for making your own natural skin butter. Skin butter can be personalized by using different natural oils and vegetable butters in the recipe. Make small batches because skin butters made without preservatives only have a shelf life of up to six months.

To make skin butter, you need a vegetable oil and beeswax or floral wax. Have a container ready in which to put your butter. It should have a tight fitting lid and be airtight. It is not an exact science when you are making skin butter. If you make it too thin or too thick, it is easy to reheat the mixture and add more of either the oil or beeswax to the mixture. Generally, a half and half mixture of oil and beeswax will give you a lip balm texture. Using one part wax to six parts oil will give you the texture of a very soft ointment.

You will need to melt the beeswax in the oil first. The easiest way is to use a microwave. Place the oil and beeswax in a heatproof bowl. The beeswax can heat very fast and you want to avoid boiling the mixture because it will take longer to cool. Start by heating it at high for one minute and then stirring to melt the beeswax. Repeat until the beeswax is completed melted and blended into the oil. That is it. Let the mixture cool for a bit before placing it into your container. You can put it in the freezer to speed things up.

You can personalize your skin butter or balm by using different oils or vegetable butters in your recipe. Some oils have their own fragrance though the beeswax adds a sweet scent to the mixture. You can infuse oil with herbs by soaking the herbs in the oil and then gently heating the oil. Avoid boiling the oil. Strain the oil and then add the beeswax to it. You can use both oils and vegetable butters such as mango, cocoa, shea nut and avocado in your mixture.

The shelf life of your skin butter will be only six months at the most. Because the age of oil found in the grocery store may be unknown, your oil may not be very fresh when you first make your ointment. This can affect the shelf life of your skin butter. If the appearance or smell of your skin butter does change, toss it out and make a new batch.
