A listing of some environmentally oriented events and activities scheduled for August.
The dog days of summer might be fast approaching, but environmental action continues around the globe just the same. After all, if environmental problems don't take vacation, why should the groups that organize efforts to tackle those problems? Green events for August include a tour aimed at promoting sustainable eating, eco-oriented gatherings in the U.K. and on both coasts of the U.S., and an eight-day-long "camp" for bringing together and educating grassroots activists working against climate change. Among the coming month's events: Sustainable Table's Eat Well Guided Tour of America, July 31 - Sept. 8. Sustainable Table, a New York-based non-profit organization that has produced the Eat Well Guide and the Meatrix series, plans to travel cross-country this summer to "celebrate local, sustainable food and the folks who produce, distribute, promote, and eat it!" The tour kicks off in West Hollywood, with film screenings, meal events, musical performances and other activities planned for stops throughout California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. The Big Green Gathering, Aug. 1 - 5: Billed as "Europe's biggest green gathering," the BGG is a camping event held in the Mendip Hills in Somerset in the U.K. The gathering is expected to draw between 15,000 and 20,000 people, and will feature numerous musical groups, a theater, a kids' area and fairground, and areas dedicated to food and farming, green crafts, sustainable homes, green business and more. American Community Gardening Association's annual conference, Aug. 9 - 12. Dubbed "Beantown Digs Community Gardens," this year's ACGA conference, to be held at Northeastern University, will feature hands-on workshops, a film festival, speakers, a silent auction and tours of community gardens, parks and other green spaces in the Boston area. The Camp for Climate Action, Aug. 14 - 21. Organizers plan to hold this year's Camp for Climate Action at Heathrow airport in London, U.K. They selected the location because it is "the world's busiest airport and a bigger source of CO2 emissions than most countries." The purpose of the camp is to "explore grassroots solutions to climate change." Workshops, skill-sharing discussions and debates will explore such areas as science and politics, strategy and action, movement-building and sustainable activism. SolFest XII, Aug. 18 - 19. To be held at the Solar Living Institute's Solar Living Center in Hopland, California, SolFest XII will feature mainstage appearances by Amy Goodman, Dar Williams, Alice Walker and Bruce Cockburn; workshops on solar electric systems, building with bamboo and socially responsible investing; a Saturday night Moondance party; a fun zone and other entertainment for kids; and numerous organic food vendors, as well as wine-tasting and organic beer sales.
