Unlike Kermit the Frog, it's easy to be green, especially at Halloween--you just need to be a little more creative.

Instead of wasting gas and time going to the mall, take a detour and just head for your kitchen cupboards. You are sure to find almost everything you need to create a ghoulishly green holiday.

What Potential Halloween Items Have You Got?

Check your cupboards for forgotten coffee filters, paper muffin baking cups, unused glass plates, odd bits of ribbon, black felt or construction paper, and don’t forget that pile of old magazines in the living room.

For some extras you’ll need go to your local hardware store (for pipe cleaners or thin wire, battery-powered tea lights and candles) and the local farmer’s market (for organic pumpkins and oranges). You can keep the tea lights for next year, bake a couple of pies, and have a healthy snack later.

Recycled Cereal Box Treat Box

You and the kids can whip up treat boxes to hand out to guests from cardboard cereal and other produce boxes faster than you can say ‘Trick or treat.” Remove the tops, paste on spooky pictures cut from magazines or use leftover wrapping paper, add some handles and you;'re done.

Gothic Goblet Votives

If you’ve got a few chipped wine goblets taking up room in a cupboard, why not transform them into gothic votives. Just paint the glasses using a black (or orange) ceramic paint (available at hardware or paint stores), let dry and pop in a candle. Use them to light up your Halloween dining or hall table.

Spooky Orange

Kids get a kick out of these little critters that are also a healthy snack (just don’t tell them!). Take a few oranges (or grapefruit), add a tiny witch’s hat, a little black mask, and pop each on top of a small stand (ours are the actually the tops of old spray paint cans!). Add a ruffle or two made from paper muffin cups and then scatter these around the room or use them as place holders.

Masked Mirror

Cut out some spooky eyes and mouth from a large piece of black felt or construction paper and then place inside the frame of a hall mirror. Add a holiday light string around the frame and, when guests arrive, turn on only these lights for a creepy entrance. You can reuse this 'mask' year after year, just roll it and stow it.

Spooky Plate Settings

To add a bit of spice to your place settings, place a freaky paper cut-out witch, cat, or skeleton or whatever on top of a plain white plate and top with a clear glass one. Dare your guests to eat off of these devilishly, dubious dishes.

Create even more Halloween decorations and tricks and treats to brighten up your home and delight the little ones this Halloween.
