For a fabulous decoration for your front door this spring, you can't do much better than to use pussy willows as a decorative feature in plain twig wreath.

With just a little imagination and a little time, you can create a simple but stunning wreath for your front door or any empty wall space by using pussy willows you‘ve collected yourself during a countryside walk or purchased at the farmer’s market. You can also buy pussy willows at a florist shop, garden center or even your local grocery store.

All you need to make this wreath is a natural grapevine or twig wreath entwined with short stems of pussy willow twigs. This striking arrangement will make a dramatic decoration for a front door or a blank wall in the hallway or kitchen.

The good news is that this wreath will last longer than if you simply placed the pussy willows into a vase.

Making this wreath is a lot amount of fun, is very inexpensive and it’s easy to do because it’s so simple. It is a bit messy so be sure the cover the work table with newspapers before starting the arrangement. If you have any stems left over, place these into a vase in a dark corner that needs cheering up.

The whole family can help with this project and you may want to make one or two more to give as a gift for a friend or family member.

Note: Twig or grapevine wreaths can be purchased at craft stores or at a local garden center.

Materials and Tools

  • 35-cm diameter natural twig or grapevine wreath base
  • Pussy willow branches
  • Hand pruners or secateurs
  • Ribbon

Instructions

  1. Cover your work space with newspapers.
  2. Place the grapevine or twig wreath on the work table.
  3. Using the hand pruners, cut the pussy willow branches into short lengths, making sure that each one is slightly different in length.
  4. Starting at the bottom center of the grapevine or twig wreath, insert each of the cut pussy willow stems into the wreath starting.
  5. Work your way up one side and then repeat on the other.
  6. Create a thin layer around the entire wreath and then, for more fullness, add the rest of your pussy willow stems into both sides of the wreath.
  7. Continue adding the cut stems until you are satisfied that the wreath looks just right. Remember that wreath-making is similar to flower arranging in that symmetry and simplicity go a long way.
  8. Once the circle is complete, add a ribbon to the top of the wreath as a hanging loop.
  9. You can hang the wreath on your front door or any blank wall space that could use a bit of decoration.
