When it comes to making something from nothing, you really can't beat Mother Nature's bounty.

By just pruning a few trees in your back yard, you can take the smallest pieces of twigs and create wonderfully rustic and useful accessories for your home. Why not start with a simple soap dish for the bathroom and a candle holder for your dining room table? Both are made from a few small pieces of twigs and both take no time at all to make, costing almost nothing. All you need is a saw or pruning shears, a few nails and a hammer.

Both the soap dish and candle holder would make very attractive hostess gifts. Make just one, a pair, or a dozen for yourself or to give away.

The soap dish measures 4 inches by 3 inches while the candle holder consists of twigs ranging in length from 3 inches to 5 inches nailed to a 1 inch base support.

Tools for Both Accessories

  • Pruning shears
  • Small hand saw
  • 1/2" or 3/4" headless nails
  • 1 small hammer
  • Fine sand paper
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Preparation

  1. First collect enough material for these projects.
  2. With the pruning shears cut small branches and use the smaller twigs to make the soap dish and candlestick holders.
  3. Measure the lengths you will need and cut these using the small saw.
  4. Smooth out the ends of all the lengths you have cut using with sand paper.

Twig Soap Dish

Note: Each twig measures ½ inches in diameter

  • 2 – 5 inch twigs
  • 4 – 4 inch twigs

Instructions

  1. On a flat surface, place two of the 5 inch twigs about 2 ¾ inches apart; these form the base.
  2. Place each one of the 4 inch twigs about ¼ inches apart on top of the two base pieces and then nail into place.

The soap dish is ready to use.

Candle Holder

Note: Each twig is approx. ½ inches in diameter

  • 10 - Various sized twigs (3 inches to 4 inches)
  • 1 – 1 inch high x ¾ inch diameter (centre support)
  • 8 – 3 inch twigs
  • 6 – 5 inch twigs (base support)
  • Glue gun and sticks (optional)

Instructions

  1. Measure and cut out the pieces you will need for this project and sand the ends.
  2. To hold the candle in place, you will need to hammer a headless nail into the top centre of the centre support twig piece, letting it stick out abut 1 inch.
  3. Next using the ten twigs, nail these one by one around the centre support. (You can use a glue gun to hold these twigs in place while you nail them in place.)
  4. Finally, place the 5 inch base twigs, log-cabin style, one on top of the other around the candle holder and nail into place.

Once you have mastered these simple twig accessories, why not make a twig_basket or two.
