Writing a classified ad is can be daunting. Writing an ad that gets attention and sells your goods can be easy with these tips to turn your junk into cash.

Simple living advocates getting down to the basics. Not just eliminating excessive debt, but paring down the unnecessary items that bog down your life. Those un-used objects take up storage space that could otherwise be better used to stock up on needed goods, and the extra cash made from selling them can always go towards paying off a debt, like credit cards or mortgage.

Online vs. Print Classifieds

Selling classifieds is no longer as costly as putting up an ad in the newspaper; many used to charge a fee to advertise in their publication. Nowadays, some print media opt for free classified ads to compete with free services like Craigslist, Kijiji or free local websites within your district. Check to see if your weekly or daily paper charges a fee, otherwise, opt for a free, online classified ad.

Step-By-Step Selling Tips

  1. Keep your description down to one paragraph. This will sustain attention long enough to describe the details, and prevent people from scanning past it, if it “looks too complicated.”
  2. Write your ad first using a function that has spell-check and have a friend proof read it. Abbreviations are fine, but typos are not. This way, you can have a friend double check your ad to see if the message comes across clearly.
  3. Mention details that sell: Describe its colour, height, width, depth, pattern, materials it contains or is made with, what it does, and what its best feature is. Suggest how it could be put to best use.
  4. A quick sentence as to why you’re selling. “If it was so good,” people will think, “why are you selling it in the first place?” A sentence like, “received a newer model” or “we’re downsizing our home” can explain the sudden liquidation.
  5. Pricing: Keep in mind that if it is used, you shouldn’t be offering more than half the original price. Take a look at eBay to compare how much similar items are being sold for.
  6. If you are willing to bargain, say so: Place “or Best Offer” next to your price, or “willing to negotiate” in your text.
  7. Be clear in your description: When typing in your title, keep it simple: “Oak Coffee Table” will get more hits than “Charming Addition To Your Living Room.”
  8. A picture is worth a thousand words. Some sites allow photos, and take good, clear pictures, in full sunlight, if possible. Flashes tend to alter the colour, or flare against the lense making the picture unclear. Don’t be afraid to use a close-up if there’s a detail.
  9. Don’t hide the flaws. Let your buyers know if there is something wrong with it, so they won’t be disappointed once they are up close to it.
  10. Mention how much the retail value was. This will give buyers an idea of what the item is worth: everyone loves to feel they’re getting a bargain.
  11. State whether or not you can deliver, otherwise mention it is pick up only.

Always arrange for someone else to be home with you once your item has been arranged for pick up. While most classifieds are strictly buying-and-selling transactions, a little caution can ensure the only thing being picked up is the item you are selling.

Part 2 of this article will focus on other ways to be safe with your online selling.
