Giving the gift of love to a child in need through the easy and practical act of filling up a shoe box can be the best gift for both the giver and the child.

Filling an Operation Christmas Child box is a time-honoured tradition to many and a new concept to many others each year. A project adopted by Samaritan’s Purse in 1993, Operation Christmas Child is a great way to bless needy children and families all over the world.

Samaritan’s Purse With a Purpose

Samaritan’s Purse is an international evangelical organization that has been aiding underdeveloped and underprivileged countries all over the world since 1970. Gleaning its name from the well-known parable of the good Samaritan, the organization strives to lend a helping hand just as the Samaritan in the parable did for the injured man. (Luke 10:25-37)

Samaritan’s Purse runs a number of programs to provide practical help to those in need. Through these various programs, Samaritan’s Purse aims to provide medical care, relief from natural disasters, breakthroughs in poverty, education to those who lack. Samaritan’s Purse does not fill these needs on its own as an organization, but partners with supporters and local churches.

Operation Christmas Child a Shoe Box Gift

Operation Christmas Child began in 1990 by a compassionate couple as a practical gift of medical supplies, food, clothing – items that fill basic needs – to orphanages in Romania. Now a project of Samaritan’s Purse, it is the most widespread children’s Christmas program.

It is as simple as giving gifts that fit into a shoe box to a child who needs it. It is a practical and hands-on way for anyone to lend his or her own helping hand. It supports a good cause and it is great for families to do together: for adults and children alike. It is a great Christmas activity for kids who want to help other kids.

The Gift of Love

An advanced and fairly wealthy country like Canada is blessed even in a recession. Canadians are blessed with comforts and conveniences that are so much a part of life that many take them for granted. Christmas can be celebrated with so many traditions, entertainments and good times with family and friends. But it can also be celebrated by lending a hand to a needy child in such a simple way.

Filling a Christmas Child box takes little effort and little time in light of the amount of time and effort spent on other Christmas activities. Filling a Christmas Child box and sending it with Samaritan’s Purse to someone less fortunate is gratifying to the sender and can give a gift to a child that may otherwise receive nothing. It is showing love in a tangible way. Find out more about giving good Christmas gifts.
