Springtime Fresh Natural Kitchen Cleaners

Homemade Green Cleaners for Domestic Cleaning

Apr 13, 2009 Patrice Campbell

The spring cleaning is done, but keeping the shine and freshness is an ongoing process. Non toxic cleaning with natural cleansers make environmental and economical sense.

Expand on the basic homemade natural cleaners already in your green cleaning cupboard with environmentally friendly products for maintaining a cleaner home.

Sparkling Fresh DishesShow off the beauty of dishes and cookware without stains or waterspots. It's easy to keep kitchenware in good order without purchasing additional cleaners or products with damaging chemicals.

  • Keep baking dishes clean by scrubbing out baked on food with salt.
  • Burnt on food can be removed from the inside of pots and pans by boiling a quart of water with 2 tbs baking soda. Turn off the heat and let the mixture stand until the crusts loosen.
  • When soaking a greasy pan, add a teaspoon or two of baking soda to the hot water.
  • Get the tea and coffee stains out of cups and mugs with a paste of baking soda.
  • Make dishes shine naturally by adding a cup of white vinegar to the dishwashing cycle.
  • Remove hard water mineral buildup in the dishwasher with unsweetened lemon drink powder. Just empty the pack into the empty dishwasher and run through on cycle.

Copper Cleaner

Get rid of the smelly chemicals purchased to make the copper cookware shine. Cut a lemon in half and scrub the stains from copper with coarse salt. Rinse well and dry. The lemon scent is far more appealing than the chemical odor.

Naturally Fragrant Shine

Bring a breath of spring into the kitchen by doing a final wipe down of cupboards counters with a rinse of essential oils and water. Mix up a batch that can be stored in a dark cool area.

Pour a pint of water into a spray bottle. Add 4 drops of any of the following essential oils.

  • Eucalyptus
  • Lemon
  • Lemongrass
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Lime
  • Grapefruit

Keep Kitchen Drains Free of Clogs and Odors Naturally

To keep the drains free pour ½ cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by ½ cup of lemon juice. Let the mixture fizz for at least 30 minutes. Pour a gallon of boiling water down the drain to flush away any trapped debris.

To get rid of odors in the garbage disposal, grind up some ice cubes and lemon or orange rinds.

Make a stainless steel sink shine by rubbing with a baking soda paste and rinsing thouroughly.

Conquer the Flies without Chemicals

Don’t cringe when the screen door slams. Keep the flies out with a natural potpourri.

Mix:

  • 2 cups lavender
  • ½ cup spearmint leaves
  • 1 cup rosemary leaves
  • 1 cup southernwood
  • ½ cup santolina
  • ¼ cup pennyroyal
  • ¼ cup mugwort
  • ¼ cup tansy
  • ¼ cup cedarwood
  • 3 tbsp. orris root

Place in a decorative bowl near the entryway. Add flowers from the garden if desired.
