Make a Unique Cake Stand from Little Used China

Transform Old Dishware into a Useful Stand for Your Baked Goodies

Aug 17, 2009 Stefanie Gabrych Fraser

It's easy to create a visually whimsical cake stand reminiscent of the mad Hatter's tea party in Alice in Wonderland from dishware hidden away in your cupboards.

So you've got a stash of little used or vintage dishes, plates, cups, bowls, and saucers taking up valuable space in your kitchen or dining room cupboards, or perhaps your've inherited your Aunty Jane's china that clashes with your more modern ones. In any case, now is the time to dust them off and put them to work.

If you are hesitant to throw away or sell these, here's a way that you can use a few to create one or two charming table accessories to display your own home baked goodies - fit for tea with royalty.

The best part is that there’s no messy drilling involved: you don’t need any expert knowledge or special tools to create this exquisite table accessory. In relatively little time, you can make several at a time. All you will need is some ceramic glue and any dishware you are willing to upcycle.

Before You Start

  • Almost any cup, saucer, bowl, plate can be combined; however, you will need to make sure that the cup handle does not extend over the top of the cup as this will make the whole stack uneven.
  • Before starting, you will need to consider the scale of possible combinations. Also the cake stand will be more visually more appealing if you match materials – for example, use porcelain with porcelain, not ironstone, etc. Also, colors and patterns should also be considered.
  • When assembling the cake stand, keep it balanced by using two heavier plates or soup bowls stacked back to back as the base.
  • Try a few variations before you decide on the final look. Be careful, though, as it can come crashing down in an instant! And remember, use cups and dishes that you won't mind sticking together as once they're all stuck, you won't be able to take them apart!
  • Assemble the cake stand in stages; for example, glue each set of two cups together first; then the two base plates; next, a set of cups to the base; and then glued sets of cups to plates working upwards. Be sure to let each set dry before assembling the next one.

What You Will Need

  • Used or vintage cups, plates, bowls, saucers
  • Ceramic glue

Instructions

  1. Wash with warm soapy water, and then dry all the pieces before assembling.
  2. Follow the directions on the ceramic glue package that you purchased. You may have to wait as the each stage dries. Spread the glue on the surfaces as required.
  3. Press the two pieces together.
  4. Allow to dry completely.

Don’t be in too much of a hurry and you will be rewarded with an amusing and very original and very amusing china sculpture.
