Going green while buying designer fashions can be difficult, but used vintage clothing can be purchased at consignment boutiques for half the cost.

It can be hard to stay on top of fashion trends while trying to save money and the environment, buying clothes from second-hand stores and consignment boutiques help accomplish both those goals without causing style to suffer.

Why Buy Used Clothes?

Keeping a unique and fashionable personal style can be costly, but it doesn’t have to be. There are several second-hand stores and consignment boutiques in most cities carrying a wide range of items from clothing to accessories. Some of the people whose style grabs the most attention are those who purchase rare used clothes.

Used clothes are also environmentally friendly. Recycled clothing promotes sustainable fashion, encouraging less new manufactured items and slowing the amount of waste piling up. Used vintage clothes advocate a smarter, eco-conscious buyer.

How to Shop for Cheap Vintage Clothing

The distinctive style that comes with buying used doesn’t go without its struggles. It can be very time consuming and frustrating to pick out the few good finds in some second-hand stores. It takes patience and a certain amount of time allotted for the purpose. A few key points to keep in mind when buying used items are designating a fixed time for shopping, checking for quality pieces and only buying what will actually be worn.

For the very busy shopper it can be hard to set a couple of hours of shopping time just for browsing second hand clothing stores, but if serious about finding some exceptional used clothes it is necessary. Often the smaller, personally owned consignment boutiques have better finds and a cozier atmosphere than the chain second hand stores, but choosing the right location depends on how much time is available and personal preference of shopping environment. Shopping online is an option for those who don’t have the spare time, eBay and other online consignment stores have a lot of options for every style.

When browsing recycled clothing stores it is important to check for quality in the clothes being purchased. Usually the establishment won’t sell items that aren’t clean and in good condition, but some bad ones can always get through. A small tear or inconspicuous spot can be over-looked, but be weary of threads that can easily unravel and stains that make the item look dingy.

It can be tempting to purchase nice clothes just because they are on sale, but if they wouldn’t be worn for full price they shouldn’t be purchased, even if they are a steal.

Sustainable Fashion

Buying vintage used clothing helps the environment and shows an active involvement in sustainable living. It takes some dedication to constantly keep environmental matters in mind when shopping and going about daily affairs, but with the added perks of great unique style and the feeling of making a difference the extra effort can be well worth it.
